Dieter's Motors shop front on Ventura Blvd in Oxnard — Mercedes, BMW and Volvo service signs

Pass the first time — or know exactly why not

In California most gasoline vehicles need a smog check every two years at registration, and most also need one when they change owners. When your DMV renewal notice says smog certification is required, bring it to Dieter's Motors on Ventura Blvd, just off the 101 in Oxnard. The test is $59 for cars, vans and light trucks. We test drivers from Oxnard, Camarillo, Port Hueneme, El Rio and across Ventura County (the state smog certificate fee may be added if your vehicle passes — ask when you book).

Because we are a smog and repair station, a failed test isn't a dead end. The same shop that ran the test reads the codes, checks the readiness monitors and finds what is actually wrong — a vacuum leak, a tired oxygen sensor, a catalytic converter or an EVAP fault. You get a written estimate before any repair starts. For harder problems we use the same tools as our check engine light diagnostics service. Once it's fixed, we re-test it here, so you leave with a passing result instead of a to-do list.

We have tested and repaired vehicles in Oxnard since 1972, from daily commuters and work vans to Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Running a diesel truck over 14,000 lbs GVWR? That falls under CARB's separate program — see our Clean Truck Check page. Whatever you drive, call (805) 485-1575 to book.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Still not sure? Call (805) 485-1575 — we'll give you a straight answer.

How much is a smog check in Oxnard?

A smog check at Dieter's Motors is $59 for cars, vans and light trucks. If the vehicle fails, we diagnose the cause and give you a written repair estimate before any work starts. Diesel trucks over 14,000 lbs GVWR need a Clean Truck Check instead, which is $99. Call (805) 485-1575.

Do I need an appointment for a smog check?

Calling ahead or booking online is recommended so we can confirm a test slot. We are open Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm at 2681 Ventura Blvd in Oxnard. Drive the car for at least 15 to 20 minutes before you arrive so the engine is fully warmed up.

What happens if my car fails the smog check?

You get the test report and a clear explanation of why it failed. Because we are a smog and repair station, our technicians can diagnose the fault, quote the repair, fix it here and then re-test. Common causes include check engine codes, incomplete readiness monitors, oxygen sensors, catalytic converters and EVAP leaks.

How often does my car need a smog check in California?

Most gasoline vehicles need a smog check every two years at registration renewal once they are past their first several model years, and most vehicles need one when ownership changes. Your DMV renewal notice will say whether smog certification is required. Fully electric vehicles do not need smog checks.

Can I smog my car right after clearing a check engine light?

Usually not. Clearing codes or disconnecting the battery resets the readiness monitors, and incomplete monitors can fail the test. The car normally needs several days of mixed driving for the monitors to set. If the light keeps coming back, have the fault repaired first — we can diagnose it.

My DMV notice says I need a STAR station. Can you test my car?

Some DMV notices direct a vehicle to a specific type of smog station. Call us at (805) 485-1575 with your notice before you drive over, and we will tell you whether we can test your vehicle so you do not waste a trip.
