Test and repair under one roof

California's Clean Truck Check program — CARB's Heavy-Duty Inspection and Maintenance (HD I/M) program — requires periodic emissions testing for most non-gasoline vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR that operate in the state. That covers a lot of Ventura County: landscape and contractor trucks, box trucks on delivery routes, owner-operators and the ag and municipal vehicles that work the Oxnard Plain.

Dieter's Motors is an official Clean Truck Check test station, and a certified technician performs the test at our shop on Ventura Blvd. Newer trucks are typically tested through the onboard diagnostic (OBD) system; older engines get a smoke opacity and visual inspection. We do not offer mobile testing, so plan to bring the truck in. Bring the truck warmed up, with any active warning lights noted, and we'll tell you before the test if something looks likely to cause a failure.

The real advantage is what happens when a truck fails. Most testers can only hand you the result. We are also a full diesel repair shop, so we can diagnose the DPF, NOx sensor, SCR/DEF or exhaust fault, repair it and re-test without a week of towing between shops. Running several trucks? A fleet account adds compliance-deadline reminders and a reduced labor rate. We serve trucks from Oxnard, Camarillo, Ventura, Port Hueneme, Santa Paula and the rest of Ventura County.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Still not sure? Call (805) 485-1575 — we'll give you a straight answer.

How much is a Clean Truck Check in Oxnard?

A Clean Truck Check (CARB HD I/M) test at Dieter's Motors is $99 per vehicle, performed by a certified technician at our shop at 2681 Ventura Blvd, Oxnard. If the truck fails, repairs are diagnosed and quoted before any work starts. Fleet accounts get a reduced labor rate on repairs — call (805) 485-1575 and ask for Joel.

Which vehicles need a Clean Truck Check?

CARB's Clean Truck Check applies to most non-gasoline vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR that operate in California, including diesel work trucks, box trucks and many owner-operator rigs. Gasoline vehicles and lighter trucks generally stay in the regular smog check program instead. If you are not sure where your vehicle falls, call us with the GVWR from the door sticker.

How often do I need a Clean Truck Check?

CARB sets the testing schedule, and it has been increasing as the program phases in, with deadlines tied to your vehicle's DMV registration. Owners also register vehicles in CARB's Clean Truck Check system and pay CARB's annual compliance fee separately. Check your notice from CARB or the CARB Clean Truck Check website for your exact due dates.

Do you offer mobile Clean Truck Check testing?

No. Clean Truck Check testing at Dieter's Motors is done at our shop only, at 2681 Ventura Blvd in Oxnard. The upside is that if your truck fails, it is already in a repair bay with a diesel technician and scan tools, so diagnosis can start right away instead of scheduling a second visit.

What happens if my truck fails the Clean Truck Check?

We explain the result and diagnose the cause. The usual culprits are DPF faults, NOx sensors, SCR or DEF system problems, exhaust leaks, high opacity readings and active check engine codes or derates. You get a written estimate, we repair it in the same shop, and then re-test so you can get back into compliance.

What is the difference between a smog check and a Clean Truck Check?

A regular smog check covers cars, vans and light trucks through the BAR smog program and costs $59 here. The Clean Truck Check is CARB's separate program for heavy-duty, non-gasoline vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR and costs $99 here. Dieter's Motors does both at the same Oxnard location.
